Rehabilitation means to reform, to reorganize, to restructure, to put in a better functional form. It goes far beyond dealing with the handicapped. It is about dealing with people with special need and these people can be grouped into various classes. We have people with sensory deprivation, that is the malfunctioning of the sense organs that have to do with the eyes, the ears. We also have those derived from the physical structure, the physically handicapped as we call them. They include the lame, the amputee, the cripple, and what have you.
With our limited fund, one rehabiltation centre is operational in the capital. We offer to our co-patriots Congolese’s Kinesitherapy programme which includes: exercises (UGUL) are a set of exercises with the use of slings (to alleviate weight). The objective is to regain or achieve mobility and to strengthen joints and muscles; Services provided by Occupational Therapists is assessment and treatment of hand and upper limb problems which impact on a person's function. This involves development of hand skills such as reaching, grasping, releasing and manipulating and may also include use of splints to maintain/improve hand position. We also use of specifically designed activities to facilitate independence and enhance motor cognitive, perceptual and psychological skills. This is largely done through the professional counseling (individual or in group), who are given the tools and understanding of how to cope with their physical circumstances, live with their problems, and regain faith in life. The impact of this counseling is strengthened and reinforced by occupational therapy workshops, cultural events and recreational activities that aim at reintegrating the co-patriots into the communities, provide them with a useful occupation, and give back an air of normalcy to their lives. The clinics have evolved into full rehabilitation centers offering braces, wheelchairs, physiotherapy, outreach and community work with disable people.
What we will do: as high number of cases it is foreseen that a referral centre will be constructed to better serve this section of co-patriots. The rehabilitation facilities to persons with a disabilities residing in rural areas are very limited, if not, unknown. We are requested more resources to set the rehabilitation clinics the rural areas since landmines buried in countryside are higher and persons with landmine amputees are significant. |
